BUG Clicker Window Black, Blank or Closing Right Away (Fix)

Character Studio, the Line Editor or Show character opens black or blank, or closes at once? Update to 1.18.5 and turn off graphics acceleration.

This is the most common BUG Clicker problem. The character on the desktop works, but Character Studio, the Line Editor or the Show character window opens black, opens empty, or closes right away. Work through these steps in order. They are taken from the app's own troubleshooting settings and patch notes (checked against version 1.18.5 for Windows).

1. Update to 1.18.5 or later

Version 1.18.5 (October 30, 2026) fixed a cause that turning off graphics acceleration could not: on some PCs, another program had changed Windows folder permissions, so the helper process that draws these windows could not read the app's files. The app now notices this, adds read permission to its own folder and asks you to restart.

Open Settings → About → Updates and press Check now, then restart BUG Clicker when it asks.

2. Turn off graphics acceleration

Open Settings → About → Troubleshooting → Turn off graphics acceleration, then restart the app.

This mostly happens on laptops with two graphics chips (an NVIDIA card plus built-in graphics, for example). Your characters and speech bubbles still show normally with acceleration off. Recent versions also ask you about this by themselves when a window opens empty.

3. Send a problem report

If the window still turns black or closes, open Settings → About → Troubleshooting → Make a problem report file. The zip includes the version, Windows details, error logs and the name of the helper process that stopped. It does not include your images or lines. Send it through the contact form on bugndev.web.app.

Nothing appears when I open the exe

Wait. The first launch unpacks files and can take about 30 seconds. Click the exe once, not repeatedly.
Look in the tray. Click the ^ (hidden icons) next to the clock. BUG Clicker keeps running there even when all its windows are closed.
Check your antivirus. If it quarantined or blocked BUG-Clicker.exe, restore it and add it as an exception.
Check the warning windows. "Windows protected your PC" needs More info → Run anyway the first time. See the download guide.
If it still never appears, the reason is saved in startup-error.log. Send it to the developer with your question.

The window is too slow rather than black

With many characters out, turn on Light motion in Settings → About → Troubleshooting. It draws breathing, ears, tails and wings less often. Pause when away stops all motion while you are not using the PC.
